Its goal is to create a widely accepted framework for the design of green buildings, adding value to the undertaking and promoting sustainable construction. This certification was developed in 1993 by the US Green Building Council to encourage the construction of energy-efficient and sustainable buildings. Its goal is to recognize and honor the application of sustainable practices throughout the whole construction process of a real estate project, ranging from resource management, energy conservation, and water management to environmentally friendly environment development. The mere fact that a building bears this accreditation proves that its owners and the environment benefit from the highest design, construction, and upkeep standards. It is projected that attaining LEED certification standards saves 30% to 70% on energy usage, 30% to 50% on water consumption, and reduces apartment trash by 90%.
